Choosing and installing a theme is one of the most important aspects of your WordPress site. A theme determines what your frontend looks like and is vital to attracting visitors. Themes can be installed in any one of three ways, from the repository, uploading from the computer or by using an FTP. In this tutorial, we are going to learn how to install a theme via WordPress Repository and uploading from the computer. These are the quickest and simplest way to install a theme and is ideal for beginners. WordPress has a wide selection of attractive themes to choose from to get you started.

Install WordPress theme directly from WordPress repository

This is the easiest way to install WordPress theme. You can install new theme within few clicks within WordPress dashboard. The only limitation in this method is that you can install the WordPress theme present in the WordPress repository only.

Step 1:

Login to WordPress dashboard.

Click on the Appearance >> Themes menu.

You reach to the Themes page. Click on the Add New button as shown in the following screenshot.

Step 3:

In the Add Themes page, search for the right theme using the search box. You can scan through the entire WordPress theme repository from this page.

When you find the right theme, hover over it. You will see two buttons: Install and Preview button. If you want to see how your website looks with the particular theme by clicking the preview button. When you confirm to install the theme, click on the Install button.

The theme gets installed within few seconds (depending on the size of the theme). Then, you will see Activate button instead of Install button.

If you want to apply this theme immediately, click on the Activate button. (You can activate the theme later on from the Themes page as well.)

Next step will be customizing the theme from Customizer. You can click on the Customize button which leads you to Customizer.

Install theme by uploading from your Computer

What if you need to install a premium theme? Premium themes aren’t available on WordPress repository. After you purchase and download them to your computer, you’ll have to upload it to your WordPress installation.

Now, we are going to learn how to upload and install WordPress theme from your computer.

Step 1:

Login to WordPress repository.

Click on the Appearance >> Themes menu.

On the themes page, click on the Add New button. You’ll reach the Add Themes page. (Related screenshots are presented in above method. So, haven’t been kept here. You can check them above.)

In the Add Themes page, you can see Upload Theme button on the top next to the page title. Click on the Upload Theme button. File uploaded appears. Click on the Choose File button, select the appropriate zip folder of theme and Click on the Install Now button as shown in the following screenshot.

The theme gets uploaded and installed.

You can now Live Preview or Activate the theme. (You can return to Theme page and activate the theme from theme as well.)
